This time we stayed at the fabulous Chateau Frontenac in Vieux Quebec. This is probably my favourite hotel of them all. What I find truly fascinating about it is some of the people who have stayed there, like Kings and Queens (Grace Kelly), even Alfred Hitchcock filmed the movie I, Confess there. We walked around the hotel picking out scenes from the movie and trying to figure out where Hitchcock would have sat while directing them. This is the 6th Canadian Fairmont we have stayed at thus far, so we are well on our way to our two year goal of staying at all 21 destinations over the next 2 years. It was a short trip. Actually it was too short so we are planning another trip to Quebec City for new years!

So excited to watch the fireworks over this beautiful city.

When you arrive into PEI off Confederation Bridge immediately you get a glimpse of the lighthouses and red sand beaches. We stopped at the tourist information and got a map of lighthouses close by and took the most beautiful route through little towns to find this little cutie. It was extremely windy that day.

I have a photo of my feet in every city and country I’ve been too in the last 5 years. I know its weird, but its just something I have always done since we started traveling.

Pepper celebrated her first birthday while we were in PEI. We bought her a blue ball to play with on the beach. She loved running while the tide was out, and loved covered covered in thick red mud of the ocean floor. She was not a fan of me giving her a bath in a freezing cold waterfall we found just off the edge of a cliff that over looked the beach.

This is my awesome family! From left to right: Ryan, me, Jackelyn (my sister) her boyfriend Shaun, my beautiful mother Della, and her man Keith. Don’t we all look amazing! We were on our way to a party. If you are wondering what the giant pipe is in the background, its actually part of the Irving Oil refinery. Irving is everywhere in Saint John. Still one of my all time favourite family photos.

Ryan took this the night the tropical storm came through the East coast. We were in St. Andrew’s New Brunswick at the time. It was really windy, and cold and rainy. But Ryan in true photographer form, carried his tripod and camera out to the beach to catch this stunning photo. So worth it!

Engagement photos are not for everyone, but I truly believe they should be, just like I believe family or newborn portraits are essential to a families history, engagement, pre-wedding portraits and couples photo sessions (whatever you want to call them) are essential to a relationship. Let’s think about this for a moment, if the average Canadian gets married between the ages of 25-35, and up until that point the last photos they had taken professionally were from their school days and they have wedding photos taken. How old will they be before they are photographed professionally again? My guess is somewhere around age 40! Chances are it won’t be until they have their first child, and if they love photography probably every 3-5 years until the child is a teenager, and then maybe once more as a family before that child gets married. So over the course of the following 25 years the chances of you and your fiance getting photos taken together again are slim. The only photos you will have at this point as a couple will be from your wedding day. That’s great, but its not enough. During the wedding planning and engagement stage, this is really the only time you can get away with having a couples photo shoot.

As a photographer, here are my top 3 reasons for getting engagement photos:
1. it gives us a chance to connect with the couple and for them to get used to our style of shooting ahead of the wedding. This gives us the opportunity to take more personal photos on the wedding day because we know you better.
2. It is an opportunity to be photographed as a couple without your wedding outfits on. You can wear your normal clothes which in turn will better represent the real you.
3. Engagement photos are great for guest signing books, slideshows at the wedding, your wedding website for your guests, and display photos at your reception. They have many purposes, especially if you are too embarrassed to show off photos from your high school and college days in a slideshow for your guests. Engagement photos can keep your slideshow classy.

As a bride to be (yes we are engaged, just in case you missed the post last year) here are my top 3 reasons for getting engagement photos:
1. Getting engaged was a huge turning point in our lives, it represents a commitment we made to publicly profess our love on our wedding day and to plan an event together that will mark the start of our new lives. Our engagement is more than just a ring, its part of our life and therefore we feel the need to document it.
2. I want our children to look back on these photos and say “That’s how I remember my mom and dad, they way they used to hug and looked at one another, what they wore.” it will be hard for our future children to imagine us at our wedding in our wedding dress and suit because they weren’t there to see it. Engagement photos will be a better representation of what our life was like.
3. This is all we have, this life! and we want to be remembered by the people who matter most to us in our lives. These photos will be part of our story.

If you agree with one of these reasons for getting engagement photos taken then set up a time with your photographer that works for you, a location that means something to you and details that help describe the people you are now. I promise you won’t regret it, even if the photos are not what you expected. Remember your photographer can only photograph what you show them, so if you want to show how much fun you have together then you have to genuinely have fun, if you want to have photos that will shock and surprise then come up with an idea and share it with your photographer.

Engagement sessions are more than just an excuse to get a photo for a newspaper announcement or an item that came in your wedding photography package, or photographic art you can place on your walls. This is who you are in this moment, and whoever that is, we hope you share it with the world in whatever way you wish.

During the redesign of our site, I got this idea to make my very first WordPress plugin. Not really knowing what I was getting myself into on the programming end of things, I wound up learning so much along the way. The help I received from Táve developer Jason Pirkey, was invaluable and he managed to make time for me during all the work on the new Táve 3.0 site. Its been nearly 10 years since I last formally programmed anything, other than just my website. I miss the days of ASM, Basic, C, and C++, things just seemed simpler. Programming again seemed fun and difficult and at times it made no sense at all, but only because I have been under a rock for so long and out of practice.

I have created a plugin for Contact Form 7 for WordPress that will allow the information collected on your contact form to be put into the Táve system. Now you dont have to take the info from your email response and paste it in, or use an iframe to add the form to your site. This way you can customize the form and have it look however you want with your styling and CSS knowhow. It is currently being used on this site for our contact form here.

If your still wondering what the heck Táve is – its the simplest way to go from first contact to the last check mark on the list of things to complete for each client you will ever have in your business. It keeps track of who you’re shooting, when, where and for how long. What you need to do after the shoot, and how much your making from the shoot. Its a great way to electronically sign contracts (no pens!!!) and ask your clients details to be kept all in one nice tidy place. If your office is a mobile phone like us you can use their mobile site and gain access to all that info at any time you need it. It will track payments, invoices, quotes, referrals, the number of blue smarties you ate, the list goes on. One of the features I like the most is when a client books with us it will pre-fill in the calendar with appointments and task lists to keep track of everything along the way.

I hope that our obvious love for Táve is coming through. And if you havn’t yet signed up for a 30 day trial do so through this link so the kind people at Táve will know who sent you.

Here are the requirements of the plugin:

1. You need to be running WordPress v3.0 or greater
2. It requires you to have a membership to Táve.com (get that here)
3. You must have Contact Form 7 Plugin installed.

3. On our site I use this to prevent the data in our second contact form from being put into Táve. 1. Since the day we met, we have worked together. First at a photo studio, then at a gym, then at Rowell Photography.

2. In 2007 we won an award with the Canadian National Newspaper Association for a photo essay we did on figure skating. Our essay beat out city newspapers across Canada with a distribution of 30,000.

3. We worked on the set of a YTV show as set stills photographers for 6 months. The show was called Monster Warriors and we often spent endless days shooting people dressed as monsters, sets designed to look like caves, teenagers in space suits, and guns made from vacuum cleaner parts. It was awesome!

4. A few years ago we, within the span of 2 months were interviewed by Maclean’s Magazine, CBC Radio Toronto, CBC Radio Sudbury and our local newspaper for a Trash the Dress shoot we did and on the topic of proposal photography all because I talked about it on our blog.

5.  As of 2008, Ryan and I had photographed 5000 families together. This was made possible by working at the busiest and cheapest photo studio in town for 3 years and then, when we opened Rowell Photography, photographing a church directory for the largest church in Barrie.

6. For the last 2 years we have organized the Dusk until Dawn photo shoot. Where photographers of any caliber and from anywhere can participate in a community night time shoot in various locations around the city of Barrie. We invite models, collaborate on ideas and shoot from 7pm-7am.

7. In 2010 our wedding work was featured in magazines all over the world; Canada, USA, Ireland, Czech Republic, and Russia. Our commercial work was published in 7 Nationwide publications and magazines.

8. We once drove all the way to Fredericton, New Brunswick for an engagement session. That’s 16 hours without stops, with stops its probably more like 26. It was so fun, we love driving out East.

9. Once we were stopped at lights down at Yonge and Dundas Square and images from an advertising campaign we shot were flashing on the big screens. It was crazy! I felt the way singers must feel when they hear their song on the radio for the first time.

10. Ever since we began our business we have been shooting commercial photography. We work with a few model and talent agencies in Toronto on their clients headshots and portfolios, as well as advertising companies and magazines. For a long time we wanted to focus on meeting as many of our goals for our wedding photography business, since we have done that, we would now like to formally introduce you all to the commercial side of our photography business.

A few photogra-friends of ours were on a drive around Barrie, ON and found this giant snowman conveniently located on Frost Trail, I saw their photos and just had to go on a search to find the giant snowman. At the time we had no clue where it was so I made Ryan drive around in the Heights looking for it. It was so worth the search, we had to take a family photo.

For Ryan’s 30th birthday we went to Ottawa to visit his sister, and stay at the Fairmont Chateau Laurier (we have a goal over the next 3 years to stay at each Canadian hotel). It was Pepper’s first trip, and hotel stay. Here she is playing behind the hotel

This is me and Pepper inside my favorite part of the hotel. Its a giant hallway with arched ceilings and painted murals.  We love this hotel, not only because it is so beautiful and welcomes puppies, but also because it was the home of Yousuf Karsh one of Canada’s greatest portrait photographers. His work can be found all over the hotel laid out like his own personal gallery. We stayed 2 doors down from his studio which was located inside the hotel.

Way back in November, after a very busy spring to fall wedding season we decided to take a much needed vacation. While we could have traveled somewhere hot and sunny, we chose to visit the Canadian Rockies for 10 days. My dad once told me of a train trip he went on as a kid with Via Rail out west. He said it was unlike anything he had ever experienced for travel and that seeing Canada by train is a right of passage. After much research and a little inspiration from the blog of local Toronto Star writer Reb Stevenson, we were packed and boarding our first Canadian rail ride.

Traveling by rail is really amazing, its a hotel on wheels that passes by some of the most beautiful sunsets and landscapes the country has to offer. 4 nights and 3 days on a train with no internet, no tv, no phones and you would think we would have gone stir crazy. But we didn’t, not even close. It was nice to relax, I don’t think we even knew what it really meant to relax before the trip. Being totally unconnected to anything outside the train meant connecting with everything and everyone who was inside the train with us. We met some really interesting folks from all over the world. Be it most of them were a little older than us, but we still had a great time. Travelling on The Canadian felt very nostalgic, almost like being in an old black and white movie. Our final stop was in Jasper, Alberta where we rented a car and drove the Icefields Parkway to Lake Louise. We arrived at 10pm in the darkness to our hotel, The Fairmont Chateau Lake Louise. We couldn’t see a thing, but our front desk clerk told us to wake up at 6am and open our room window to watch the sunrise over the mountains. That morning the sight of the burning orange sun cresting the tops of the black, white and blue mountains was sensational. Seeing that made the entire trip worth while.

Here are a few imagess we took in a 15 min couples photo shoot at the Cheltenham Badlands at the beginning of the month. Like I mentioned above these two were in desperate need of some updated photos. We have made it our personal quest to see these photos framed in their house, even if  we have to do it ourselves. The following day was a big day, and not just because we planned to eat at 21 Club but because Tim was going to propose to Karen. He had told us weeks go and I had been keeping the secret ever since. Well at least trying to keep it. I was pretty excited to watch a live proposal, mostly because I knew Karen would say yes  and also because Tim asked if we would take a few pics all paparazzi styles. Ryan was hiding on the front steps of the New York City Public Library (also the spot Carrie and Big were going to get married the first time around on Sex and the City) I was wearing sunglasses and a scarf over my head to cover my hair so they wouldn’t recognize me and was supposed to signal to Ryan when I saw Tim and Karen get out of the cab. Then right there in front of about 100 by standers Tim got down on one knee. I was watching from the distance, and there was kissing and hugging so I knew it was safe to come out. It was so exciting to watch.

That night we got our table at 21 Club, right next to Donald Trumps personal table (Donald wasn’t there). The food was amazing. The next morning we rushed to 30 Rockefeller to experience Top of the Rock. 78 stories up and the elevator I swear took only 30 seconds. The view were perfect, we had the most beautiful last day in the city.

On our first night in the city I had to go to NBC studios, there were tons of people sleeping in the street waiting for Saturday Night Live the following night. I put us into the lottery this year to see if we could get tickets for the trip. Hopefully our names get called. 5 years ago they were called but we couldn’t make it. Hopefully we get a second chance.

10 days driving around Iceland, staying at bed and breakfasts and experiencing the culture and landscapes. We were traveling with Greg & Lisa (who you will see very soon again on our blog) for their destination honeymoon sessions. We had 2 cars, hotels and bed and breakfasts booked all over the country. We chose the best locations to visit together for photos, and the rest of the time we had to just explore.

Here are some portraits Ryan and I took of one another along with a a bunch of our travel landscapes and cityscapes.

This is us at the Glacial Lagoon called Jökulsárlón. These icebergs break off of the glacier Vatnajökul. It is the most magical place I have ever seen. Just driving up to it took my breath away. It is one of those moments I will remember for the rest of my life.

Icelandic Horses and sheep roam free for half the year. We often saw them hiking up mountains.

Búðir is a small hamlet surrounded by lava fields. The first time I saw a photo of this church over a year ago I knew I had to shoot a wedding, or a couple there one day. The colours of the mountains and volcanoes around it are so intense, and even though they skies are overcast, the clouds are always a blue grey colour.

I love this photo below, this whole park was really interesting, it is called Dimmuborgir. Dimm meaning “dark” and borgir meaning “cities”. It is said to be the home of many trolls. We didn’t see any. But there were tons of rock formations to climb around in.

This is Ryan standing right outside of Krafla volcano. It erupted in 1989. The smoke you see is not it erupting now, that is just gas escaping from the ground, it seems to be happening everywhere in Iceland. Ryan hiked all the way through a lava field to get there.

Sometimes we would just be driving through a beautiful mountain range and all of a sudden we turn a corner and it looks like we are on another planet! Lava fields they are everywhere. The older they are the less black rock you can see. The one in this portrait of us seems to be pretty old because moss has grown on all the rocks. These volcanic rocks are really sharp and pointy so walking on them is pretty dangerous. In this pic we are standing in front of the highway with our camera rigged to the car with a clamp.

These next few are taken in Akureyri, the capital of Northern Iceland.

I love these 2 pics, first the one on the right because the red light is shaped like a heart. All red lights in Akureyri are. Then the left photo. I am really proud of Ryan and I for learning so many Icelandic words and city names, but that top word is just crazy!  Can you imagine saying “Meet me at Uppysingamiðistoði” ? (Oh and the funny “d” is pronounced like a “th” sounding like “the” in English) Good Luck!

Now these next photos are straight out of the camera, I only edited fly away hairs on my face and bags from Ryan’s tired eyes. The sky really did look like that. It was that blue.

Icelandic Turf Houses

Here we are at the base camp of Vatnajökul Glacier. Its covered in ash because it is right beside the now famous volcano Eyjafjallajökull (which I still cannot pronounce). They had sherpa’s for hire to take you up the glacier. We were so close to the volcano, but because it was so deep in the mountains and underneath a glacier there are no remnants of the explosion except for this ash.

This is a panorama taken from the top of a rock fortress in West Iceland near Grundarfjörður. (Pronounced Groon-dar-fee-your-thur)

Finally the capital of Iceland, Reykjavik. I love this city, its about as big as Barrie, with only 200,000 people, and more places to buy Pylsurs than anywhere else I’ve ever been to. Pylsurs are an all beef gourmet hotdog with no filler. Tastes awesome, although their idea of mustard is a bit different. It is the most popular restaurant in Reykjavik.

This church on the right towers above Reykjavik and is quite stunning at night. Its called Hallgrímskirkja. Kirkja means church.

Anywhere and everywhere you go in Iceland you can find someone who can sell you a traditional Icelandic wool sweater. Seriously you can get them at gas stations, book stores, coffee shops, hotels and any major tourist attraction. They are expensive, but they are all made in Iceland and mostly by hand. The last photo below is us wearing our cool new threads. People of all ages wear these traditional sweaters.  We also treated ourselves to some fun North 66 hats. North 66 is like our The North Face company but better.

This photo was taken on our last night, we wanted a night time shot of us over looking Reykjavik. The sky that night was unbelievable, the colours, once again were amazing. We walked up to one of the highest points in the city and started taking photos of the night sky. Since the sun stays up until almost midnight, the sun sets take a lot longer. People started gathering from side streets up the hill where we were to watch the sun set. It was a pretty amazing night. Our trip was so surreal, Ryan and I just look at these photos and we can’t even believe we took them, or believe the things we have seen. Seeing this much beauty is almost overwhelming, but I am definitely not complaining. I am just thankful that I have been able to experience it.
