Derek & Ali Getting Married- Toronto, ON

Last weekend I had the pleasure of hanging out with the very cool, very hip Sarah Guy of Labour of Love Photography. Together we photographed Ali & Derek’s wedding in Toronto. I was 2nd shooting for Sarah which meant I got to be a photojournalist for the day. I love 2nd shooting it gives me a chance to really sit back and watch the day unfold. I know Ryan and I always shoot together but we are 2 prime shooters, and in this situation I got to assist Sarah and shoot whatever I wanted.

In true photojournalist fashion I decided to put all these images in black and white. Color is awesome, and sometimes warranted, but I really wanted to showcase some images that captured moments as they unfolded. Being a professional photographer doesn’t always mean you have a concrete plan, actually most of the time it means that you don’t, but that you have enough experience to still create beautiful imagery no matter what happens at a shoot. You are a pro when you learn to roll with the punches, and still come out looking like a rockstar!

This wedding was a prime example of that for me, I didn’t always know what was going on, I didn’t know the couple at all I had only met them that morning, and i most definitely did not anticipate the day unfolding. But that’s what made it so thrilling.
I am especially proud of one shot. The photo of the little boy and girl walking up the aisle. You can see them just through the door as it closes. I love this shot because I was shooting pics of the bride and her father when i noticed the door opening to let the kids into the church. I was not prepared, my camera was not at the right settings and I didn’t have the lens on I would have normally shot with. I quickly spun around while shooting and got 2 shots, first shot is the one you see on the blog and the second shot has the doors almost closed and the kids not as clearly visible.
I think that is the best part of photo journalism, being right there in the moment.
I hope you enjoy these images, I know they are different, but I think they tell a story.
Thanks to Sarah for having me out, it was so much fun. I hope we get to have a few more adventures soon.
Congratulations to Ali & Derek!!

Cheers
Erika
